Notes

As correctly shown in Bischoff's Kat. §4683, this bifolium (fols 101–102), which is the only surviving copy of recension D of the Hisperica Famina, must come from an entirely different MS than fols 99–100 of the miscellaneous codex now bearing the shelfmark Lat. 11411 (for fols 99–100, see the entry for Luxembourg, Bibl. Nationale, MS 89 in the present Handlist), in spite of the fact that the latter folios also contain the Hisperica Famina, albeit in recensions B and C (pace Grosjean 1956: 38, who erroneously claimed that 'les recensions B, C et D proviennent d'un même manuscrit d'Echternach, aujourd'hui divisé entre Luxembourg et Paris'). Interestingly, both fragments contain Old Breton glosses: in his discussion of the glosses on recension D found at fols 101–102, Lambert (1989: 86–8; 1994: 103) has suggested that one or two of them may depend on an Old Irish model. In particular, in relation to the gloss enchehen dame (gl. Lat. stibulor), Lambert has concluded that this gloss 'n'est ni du breton, ni de l'irlandais: c'est un mélange des deux, avec en plus des aberrations graphiques' (Lambert 1989: 88). Bischoff had no hesitation in ascribing this fragment to Brittany in his Katalog, presumably on the basis of its script and vernacular glosses.
