Notes |
The decoration of this Gospel-book is certainly close to the Breton group, and, significantly, the text of the Gospels in this MS belongs to the 'Irish family' (Vezin 1974: 47; on the decoration, cf. also Kitzinger 2013b: 41). Moreover, Lemoine (2001: 264–7) has drawn attention to a number of specific textual readings agreeing with other Breton gospel-book. Accordingly, a tenth-century Breton origin seems probable. In its later history this MS followed a rather tortuous path: it was probably in Angers in the eleventh century (Vezin 1974: 48), and from there it reached the abbey of Saint-Maur-des-Fossés (near Paris), and then Le Mans. Eventually, it was brought to the BnF from Saint-Germain-des-Prés (ILLB In22b, p. 59). |
