Notes

This is the famous 'Cartulary of Landévennec.' It is impossible to do justice to the complexity of this important codex in these brief notes: a few indications will have to suffice (for in-depth analyses of many aspects of this MS, in addition to a complete facsimile, see the studies published in Lebecq 2015). In spite of its name, this MS is in fact more than a cartulary: indeed, the first 135 folios contain an extensive hagiographical 'dossier' on Saint Winwaloe. The cartulary proper only begins at fol. 140v with a list of the abbots of Landévennec, and ends at fol. 164v with a list of magnates of Cornouaille (fols 135v–140r are occupied by a Life of Saint Ethbin, also known as Idunet).

The bulk of the MS was written by two scribes (hands A and B), in all likelihood during the abbacy of Elisuc, i.e. between 1047 and 1055 (for a slightly later dating, cf. Garault 2011: 38). As has been pointed out by Barret (in Lebecq 2015: 18), the writing of this MS—especially hand A—resembles the script used in the roughly contemporary Cartulary of Redon (Rennes, Bibl. de l'Archevêché, MS sine numero). Lemoine (2008: 197) has drawn attention to the occurrence of the 'insular' invocation In nomine Dei summi in several charters (24, 40, 42, 43), which may have implications for the dating of these documents.
