Notes |
This MS, which may date from c. AD 900 (cf. Dumville 1992: 136) is not the only surviving piece of evidence for the Breton interest in Amalarius's Liber officialis. A Breton tenth-century copy of the so-called Retractatio prima of this text, likewise containing vernacular glosses and probably written at Landévennec, occurs also in Cambridge, Corpus Christi, MS 192. On the other hand, the Old Breton glosses are here more numerous than in the Cambridge manuscript (29 glosses in NAL 1983 versus 6 in CCC 192); indeed, the linguistic significance of these glosses has been highlighted by Fleuriot (who published an edition and detailed analysis of them. cf. Fleuriot 1966) and, more recently, by Schumacher, in a study focussing on the preterital form leit me, 'I read' (gl. Lat. legi) occurring at fol. 82v (Schumacher 2018: 364–6). Although there does not seem to be here any single piece of evidence fully demonstrating that this MS was written in a Breton scriptorium, on the other hand (1) the fact that the Retractatio prima of Amalarius's Liber certainly circulated in Brittany (if that recension was not actually produced there, cf. Dumville 1994b: 212–13), and (2) the presence of a substantial number of accurate Old Breton glosses in NAL 1983, do point to a Breton origin as the most plausible solution. |
