Notes

This is the only extant copy of recension A of the Hisperica Famina; as a consequence, this MS was used as the basis for Herren's 1974 edition of that text (Herren 1974a). The title Hisperica Famina occurs in the explicit at fol. 12v: HISPERICA FINIUNT FAMINA AƆ-CHN. The place of origin of this MS is uncertain, although both Brittany and Fleury are possible (pace Deuffic, PMSB 317, where a Breton origin is indicated as 'probable'). In particular, Grosjean (1956: 39–40) suggested that Reg.lat.81 may have been written by the Breton scribe-scholar Liosmonocus or Lios Monocus (about whom see also the entry for Rome (Città del Vaticano), BAV, Reg.lat.296 in the present Handlist), active during the ninth century possibly in Brittany and then in the scriptorium of Fleury. The same scribe may also be responsible for a part of the copy of Aethicus Ister's Cosmographia contained in one of the codicological units of Rome (Città del Vaticano), BAV, Reg.lat.1260, namely fols 125r–136v (down to line 4 of that folio). Moreover, this same Liosmonocus may be the author of the Libellulus sacerdotalis (about Liosmonocus, see Deuffic 2008: 125; about the Libellulus, see the entry for Paris, BnF, Lat. 13386 in the present Handlist). It has also been suggested that whoever wrote Reg.lat.81 may have been copying from an insular, and quite possibly Irish, exemplar—a hypothesis based on the occurrence of a rare abbreviation for nam (N with a strikethrough) and other palaeographical features (cf. e.g. Jenkinson 1980: xxiv–xxx; Grosjean 1956: 39; Herren 1974a: 10–11; Lemoine 2008: 189).
