Views on this manuscript's date diverge: Bischoff (Kat. §2423) indicated 'IX./X. Jh. oder X. Jh., Anfang' (cf. Bieler 1963: 14, 'saec. X in.), whereas Flechner (2019: I, 135) describes this as a 'tenth- or eleventh-century manuscript'; the tenth-century date indicated here is a compromise between these various positions. The script of the main hand is a Caroline minuscule exhibiting considerable insular influence. In view of this, and given that this MS contains 21 Old Breton glosses as well as numerous materials in common with other MSS with strong Breton affiliations (especially Orléans, Médiathèque, 221, as well as Paris, BnF, Lat. 3182 and Lat. 12021), it is very likely that it was written in Brittany, although, strictly speaking, we cannot exclude that it was written by a Breton scribe working outside Brittany, or in a centre of the Loire Valley under Breton influence. According to Dumville (1994: 89), the recension of the Hibernensis occurring in this MS 'shows every sign of being a Breton creation, for its sole manuscript [i.e. Cotton Otho E.XIII] is best interpreted as a version in the making, and that manuscript is Breton.'
