Notes |
This MS, which contains a single Old Breton gloss at fol. 4r (tricorihoc 'triangular', gl. Lat. trigona, cf. DGVB 320), was written as late as the early twelfth century, thereby exceeding the chronological boundaries of the present hand-list; however, Fleuriot (DGVB 7) stated that 'ce ms semble recopié sur un ms plus ancien.' Mostert (LF BF089) reports the opinions of various scholars who have suggest several possible areas of origin: Fleury, Normandy or Brittany. In any case, it is worth recalling that several MSS with Breton affiliations preserve copies of Orosius's Historiae, often designated by the Celtic-Latin title De Ormesta Mundi: many of these MSS contain Old Breton glosses (for more details, see the entries for Paris, BnF, Lat. 17543; Rome (Città del Vaticano), BAV, Reg.lat.296, Reg.lat.691, and Vat.lat.1974; Venice, Bibl. Marciana, Zanetti lat. 349) and are occasionally associated to Irish features (cf. Lambert 2018: 27). Thus, even if Bern 160 was perhaps not written in Brittany, it is nevertheless probable that its contents derived from an earlier Breton exemplar containing at least one vernacular gloss (cf. Lambert 1988: 214). According to Arnaud-Lindet (1990: lxxiv), this MS was copied from Rome (Città del Vaticano), BAV, Reg.lat.296. |
